On July 30th - August 1st, the San Ramon AZURI 95 Girls team coached by Brian Rinna & Fred Walke, participated in the largest summer showcase for youth soccer’s Best of the Best, the San Diego Surf Cup, presented by Nike. With 341 college coaches representing 195 schools in attendance, AZURI had their share of attention over the course of the tournament.
A last minute entry, AZURI traveled to San Diego expecting to try and hold their own. What started as a routine tournament turned into a 3-day, 6 game outing. AZURI managed to finish top in their bracket during pool play earning 21 points (which was the 7th highest point total out of the 84 teams competing on both the boys and girls side of the tournament) and not allowing any goals scored against them. AZURI faced New Jersey Elite in the Quarter Finals and held a 1-0 win to advance to the semis.
In a rematch from the previous weekend, AZURI was pitted against Real So Cal Black in the Semi Finals. While Real So Cal was victorious @ the Rage Showcase the weekend before, this time AZURI got the better of them and won 2-1 to advance to the finals. The final match was a test of true stamina and sportsmanship. AZURI competed against Heat FC from Nevada. With both teams scoreless after 70 minutes of regulation, AZURI & Heat had to endure two 10 minute overtimes. With OT completed and still no score, the teams moved on to penalty kicks. While AZURI fought hard until the end, they came up short in PKs and ended up taking 2nd for the U17 Gold group. While AZURI didn’t take home the title, everyone was all in until the end. Congratulations AZURI 95!
